Director — Civil Infrastructure & Public Safety
Review the public-safety implications, infrastructure use cases and operational resilience of BTG’s geospatial, field and distributed-technology systems.
APPOINTED ROLE HOLDERJim Walker
Infrastructure and safety oversight
This seat focuses on the operational environments in which engineering failures matter: roads, public infrastructure, communications, terrain, emergency planning and technology used by community organizations.
Core responsibilities
- Assess the practical value and operational limits of SearchAR, HikeAR, HuntAR and BSIE terrain or location technologies for properly scoped applications.
- Review reliability needs such as offline availability, positioning error, environmental limitations, power constraints, field usability and recovery from failure.
- Examine proposed infrastructure datasets and FarmNode processing workflows for source reliability, mapping quality, permitted use and update frequency.
- Consider field demonstrations with public institutions or responders only under the authorization and supervision of the responsible organization.
- Help define acceptance tests for incident-support concepts, operational communications, hazard reporting and infrastructure observation.
- Bring public-safety concerns, unsupported real-time claims and mission-critical dependencies to the Board before external deployment.
Areas of oversight
- Geospatial accuracy and site-specific operational constraints.
- Emergency-use boundaries and human accountability for incident decisions.
- Infrastructure continuity, field resilience and failure management.
- Partnership opportunities with local public organizations under appropriate authority.
Reports and practical outcomes
- Safety-oriented acceptance criteria for field technologies.
- A risk register of environmental, positioning and continuity failures.
- Documented feedback from properly authorized demonstrations.
- Recommendations on when a product requires more testing or qualified operational oversight.
Works with
- CEO & Chair on infrastructure partnerships
- Insurance & Enterprise Risk on potential liability
- Legal, Privacy & Data Sovereignty on lawful data access
- Engineering teams on field performance and offline systems
Questions this role brings to the Board
- What happens when a field system has the wrong location, no network or an incorrect prediction?
- Who remains responsible for operational decisions?
- What evidence supports use by a public agency in its actual environment?
